The Scout Set by Paul Fennewald, Chad Matthews, Jeff Gier & Travis Bauer
Travis Bauer, Jeff Gier, Paul Fennewald, and Chad Matthews teamed up to create a complete shooter’s rig christened “The Scout Set.” The set, which pays homage to the scouts and rangers that protected the early frontier, is built around a pouch by Travis Bauer. Made from supple calfskin, the bag features a large interior pocket. The strap is made from vegetable tanned leather and has an antique harness buckle. Jeff Gier contributed a powder horn from Scottish Highlander cattle. Featuring a gracefully turned cherry base plug, the horn is characteristic of what a colonial scout might have made in the field. Gier decorated the surface of the horn with period-inspired engraving including a deer, a bear, and a scene depicting a colonial ranger and a native warrior trading gunfire. The set is rounded out by two knives. Chad Matthews contributed a neck knife forged from 1084 steel. The knife’s handle, made from whitetail antler, exhibits a warm, aged patina and a poured pewter bolster. Paul Fennewald’s belt knife is forged from 1080 steel and fitted with an aged oak handle. Fennewald’s knife is accompanied with a well-oiled fringed leather sheath.
