Lot 15: Knit Cap and Gunnister Bag by Emily Burns and Beverly Simpson
Whether you’re target shooter, hunter, or reenactor, you most definitely need appropriate headgear for your next cold weather adventure. Artist Emily Burns’ contribution to this year’s CLF Fundraising Auction will definitely fit the bill.
Burns has donated a period appropriate knit cap that’s both warm and comfortable. The cap is made from high quality merino targhee wool and dyed with madder and sassafras bark. The cap is based on an original found in Gunnister, Scotland. It has a simple turned up brim with a lace design. “Knit caps,” Burns explains, “were a staple of a working man’s wardrobe, providing warmth and practical wear.”
The cap is also accompanied with a handy knit Gunnister bag contributed by Beverly Simpson. This bag will be extremely useful in any camp and is a perfect match to the hat. The bag is knitted with a mix of brown wool and madder dyed wool which results in a pleasant color contrast.
