Lot 29: Bowie Knife by Trey Scott
The Bowie knife is an American original: rugged, fierce, and as imposing as the frontier that gave birth to the legendary blade. With good reason, the quintessential Bowie is popular with collectors, and bidders at this year’s CLF Fundraising Auction will have the opportunity to own a truly stellar example by Pennsylvania artist Trey Scott.
Scott fashioned the 8-inch-long blade from 1075 steel; the surface of the knife possesses a striking mirror-like finish and has been honed to a razor sharp edge. The blade is married to a deeply colored East Indian Rosewood handle, and comes fitted with a Nickel Silver handguard. The handle is further emblazoned with a symmetrical pattern of domed sterling silver pins. Overall, this fearsome frontier knife measures 12 ½ inches in length. For display in home or office, it also comes accompanied with a custom display stand crafted from wormy chestnut.
This knife is also a testament of the artistic camaraderie afforded by the CLA. Scott explains that the knife is partly inspired by a John Russell Bowie knife, with mentorship from Steve Auvenshine as well as helpful input from Ian Pratt and Ken Gahagan. “I greatly appreciate all of the help,” says the artist, “I have learned an incredible amount from Steve.”
